How units are counted

One UK unit is 10 ml (8 g) of pure alcohol. Units = strength (ABV %) × volume (ml) ÷ 1,000. A pint of 4% beer is about 2.3 units, and a 250 ml glass of 13% wine is about 3.3 units.

The UK Chief Medical Officers advise not regularly drinking more than 14 units a week, spread over three or more days. Pure alcohol has about 7 kcal per gram, so drinks add calories even before sugar and mixers.

If you're worried about your drinking, the NHS and Drinkline (0300 123 1110) offer free, confidential support.
